window cleaning risksUK company in the window cleaning business has been charged £65, 000 for safety infringement. A worker from Central Window Cleaning Company Ltd fell through a skylight landing at a local shopping centre roof. The Southend-on-Sea Borough Council accused the company of safety offenses and brought it to trial.

The accused company faced charges in the Southend Magistrates Court and was eventually charged to pay additional $14, 000 in court costs to the Council.

The window cleaning accident was on 4th June 2010, when the cleaner Tony Rose from Kent was assigned to clean the Royals Shopping Center in Southend-on-Sea. Starting from the roof down in an attempt to clean the dome, Tony stepped and slipped on a the skylight made of plastic. The skylight bended and Tony fell almost 4 meters down landing on a stairway. He was lucky to be only mildly injured but bruised all over.

Work safety is of great importance, reminds Mr. Tony Cox, the Council’s executive councillor. The accident had a happy ending but one cannot always rely on good luck. Such incidents may have a tragic outcome. He also mentioned that any cleaning company should assess the risk of any surface prior to sending anyone over to clean it.
